Hello friends! It's Momma J here, and if there’s one thing we all need in these chilly months, it’s a good old-fashioned remedy for those pesky coughs. This homemade cough syrup is a staple on our homestead—made with simple, natural ingredients that soothe your throat and help kick that cough to the curb. Let’s dive in!

What You’ll Need
1 cup fresh or dried elderberries (immune-boosting and soothing)
1/4 cup dried mullein leaves (great for respiratory support)
1/4 cup dried marshmallow root (to coat and soothe the throat)
1 tablespoon dried thyme (antimicrobial and calming)
2 cups water
1 cup raw honey (for sweetness and antimicrobial properties)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (for a zesty boost of Vitamin C)
How to Make It
Combine the herbs: In a medium saucepan, mix the elderberries, mullein leaves, marshmallow root, and thyme with 2 cups of water.
Simmer gently: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer gently for about 30-40 minutes. This gives all those wonderful herbs time to release their magic.
Strain the liquid: Once the mixture has reduced by about half, strain it through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl or jar. Press the herbs with a spoon to get all the goodness out, then discard the spent herbs.
Add honey: While the liquid is still warm (not hot!), stir in the raw honey until fully dissolved.
Finish with lemon juice: Add the fresh lemon juice for an extra layer of flavor and immune support.
Bottle it up: Pour the syrup into a clean glass jar or bottle, and store it in the fridge. It’ll keep for up to 2 months.
How to Use It
Adults: Take 1 tablespoon every 4-6 hours as needed.
Kids over 1 year: Give 1 teaspoon every 4-6 hours. (Always avoid honey for babies under 1 year old.)
Why It Works
This syrup isn’t just soothing—it’s packed with herbal goodness. Elderberries boost your immune system, marshmallow root coats your throat, and thyme helps clear up your chest. Add in honey for its natural sweetness and antimicrobial kick, and you’ve got a powerhouse remedy that’s as comforting as it is effective.
From My Family to Yours This recipe has seen us through many winters, and I hope it becomes a trusted remedy in your home too. Let me know if you give it a try—I’d love to hear how it works for you!
