Oh, honey, there’s nothing quite as miserable as a stuffy nose—especially when you’re juggling kids, homestead chores, and just trying to get through the day. Whether it’s a head cold, allergies, or dry winter air, that clogged-up feeling can leave you feeling run-down.
I’ve been there. But before you run to the store for decongestants packed with artificial ingredients, let me share some natural remedies that have been working for generations—including a powerful nasal spray made with colloidal silver and goldenseal (a natural antibacterial powerhouse).
Let’s get those sinuses clear the natural way!

1. Steam Therapy – The Old-Fashioned Way to Open Air Passages
My great-uncle Butch always said, "When in doubt, steam it out." He wasn’t wrong! Steam therapy helps thin mucus, open airways, and fight bacteria in the sinuses.
How to Do It:
Boil 2 cups of water and pour it into a big bowl.
Add 2 tablespoons of dried thyme (natural antibacterial).
Optional: Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil (opens airways) or peppermint oil (soothes sinuses).
Drape a towel over your head, lean over the bowl, and breathe deeply for 5–10 minutes.
Why It Works:
Steam helps loosen mucus so you can breathe easier.
Thyme has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties (Soković et al. 2010).
Eucalyptus has been shown to help reduce sinus inflammation (Juergens 2014).
Momma J Tip: For little ones, run a steamy shower and sit with them in the bathroom instead of using a direct steam bowl. It works wonders!

2. Saline & Herbal Nasal Spray – The Game Changer
A nasal rinse is great, but sometimes, you need a little extra power. That’s where a colloidal silver & goldenseal nasal spray comes in.
What is Colloidal Silver?
Colloidal silver is a natural antimicrobial that has been used for centuries to fight infections. Studies suggest it helps reduce bacterial growth and supports respiratory health (Lansdown 2006).
What is Goldenseal?
Goldenseal is a powerhouse herb used for sinus infections, inflammation, and clearing out stubborn mucus. It contains berberine, a potent compound that fights bacteria and viruses while reducing swelling (Ożarowski et al. 2016).
💥 Heads up! Goldenseal can sting a little when used as a nasal spray—BUT IT’S TOTALLY WORTH IT! That mild discomfort means it’s getting in there and doing its job, fighting off bacteria and clearing out your sinuses.
How to Make a Natural Nasal Spray:
Mix 1/2 cup sterile saline solution (boiled and cooled water with ¼ tsp sea salt).
Add 1 teaspoon colloidal silver.
Add 2 drops goldenseal tincture (or 1 teaspoon if using a strong tea).
Use a nasal spray bottle or dropper to spritz 1–2 times per nostril as needed.
Why It Works:
✔ Colloidal silver fights bacteria in the sinuses (Lansdown 2006).
✔ Goldenseal clears out stubborn mucus and reduces swelling (Ożarowski et al. 2016).
✔ Saline flushes out irritants and keeps sinuses hydrated.
💡 Momma J Tip: If you’re sensitive to herbal sprays, start with a weaker dilution of goldenseal and work your way up!

3. Herbal Teas – Sip Your Way to Sinus Relief
A warm cup of tea isn’t just comforting—it helps clear your sinuses!
Best Herbal Teas for Nasal Congestion:
✔ Ginger Tea – Reduces inflammation and warms the body.
✔ Peppermint Tea – The menthol helps open nasal passages.
✔ Nettle Tea – Naturally reduces allergy symptoms.
✔ Thyme & Honey Tea – Antibacterial and soothing.
Momma J Tip: Add a spoonful of raw local honey to help with seasonal allergies!

4. Onion & Honey Syrup – Nature’s Expectorant
If you haven’t tried this old-time remedy yet, now’s the time! Onions and honey work together to loosen mucus, kill bacteria, and soothe inflammation.
How to Make It:
Chop one onion and place it in a bowl.
Cover with raw honey and let it sit for at least 4 hours (overnight is best!).
Take 1 teaspoon every few hours as needed.
Why It Works:
Onions contain quercetin, a natural anti-inflammatory (Boots et al. 2008).
Honey is antibacterial and soothing (Al-Waili 2004).

5. Essential Oils – A Breath of Fresh Air
Diffusing essential oils or rubbing them on your chest can open up airways and ease congestion.
Best Essential Oils for Sinuses:
✔ Eucalyptus – Clears nasal passages (Juergens 2014).
✔ Peppermint – Helps reduce swelling and discomfort.
✔ Tea Tree Oil – Fights bacteria and infections.
How to Use Them:
Diffuse a few drops in a humidifier or diffuser.
Mix with coconut oil and rub on your chest.
Add a couple of drops to a steamy shower for quick relief.
