Hello, dear friends! Momma J here, back with another herbal gem to brighten your day. This week’s spotlight falls on a flower that truly embodies the sun’s warmth and healing energy: Calendula.
Why Calendula?
With its vibrant orange and yellow petals, calendula isn’t just a feast for the eyes – it’s a soothing healer for the body and spirit. Known as the “pot marigold,” this herb has been used for centuries in salves, teas, and tinctures to promote skin health, calm inflammation, and brighten up any garden or home.
Benefits of Calendula
Skin Healer: Calendula is a top choice for soothing cuts, scrapes, and burns. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it a staple in homemade salves.
Digestive Support: A tea made from calendula flowers can help calm an irritated stomach or support gentle detoxification.
Immune Booster: Packed with antioxidants, calendula strengthens your body’s defenses, helping you stay healthy through seasonal shifts.
Natural Dye: Those cheerful petals can also be used to add a sunny hue to textiles or homemade soaps.
How We Use Calendula at Johnson Homestead
Calendula grows beautifully in our Alaskan garden during the short summer season. I dry its petals to use throughout the year in:
Homemade Salves: A blend of calendula-infused oil, beeswax, and a touch of lavender makes the perfect healing balm.
Teas: A warm infusion of calendula and chamomile is my go-to for unwinding after a busy homestead day.
Skin Tonics: A simple calendula infusion works wonders as a natural facial toner or hair rinse.
A Simple Calendula Salve Recipe
1. Infuse 1 cup of dried calendula petals in 1 cup of olive or sunflower oil for 2 weeks (or heat gently for a quicker infusion).
2. Strain the infused oil into a clean jar.
3. Melt 1 oz of beeswax and mix it into the oil until fully combined.
4. Pour the mixture into tins or jars and let it cool. Use as needed for dry skin, minor cuts, or as a soothing lip balm.
Momma J’s Pro Tip:
When drying calendula flowers, hang them in small bunches in a cool, airy space. This preserves their vibrant color and potency, bringing a little sunshine into even the darkest winters.
Calendula reminds me of resilience – it flourishes in tough conditions, just like we do here at Johnson Homestead. Its cheerful blooms are a daily reminder of the beauty and strength found in nature.

Warm hugs and healing blooms,
