Today marks one of the most cherished days of the year for those of us in the North—the first day of gaining light again. It’s a small yet profound shift, a reminder that even in the darkest seasons, the light always returns. For those of us grounded in the rhythms of nature and faith, this day holds deep meaning, especially as it coincides with the joy and hope of Christmas.
This morning, as I gathered with my church family, the air was cold and the world still cloaked in winter’s darkness. Sunrise wouldn’t arrive until nearly midday, but the promise of its coming felt all the more poignant as we worshiped together. Inside the church, the warmth of fellowship and the glow of shared faith reminded me of a greater Light—Christ’s love shining through even the longest nights.
The brief hours of daylight we have now are precious. By the time the sun rises, it feels like it’s already preparing to set. Yet this fleeting light is a symbol of hope, a reminder that the days will lengthen again. Slowly but surely, the darkness will give way to brighter mornings and longer evenings. For those of us living close to the land, this return of light signals new possibilities, a time to dream of planting, growth, and renewal.

At Johnson Homestead, this season is about leaning into gratitude. The joy of Christmas fills our hearts and our home, with laughter, Scripture, and the smells of homemade meals reminding us of God’s abundant blessings. While the world outside may be frozen, our hearts are warm with love for one another and faith in God’s promises.
Today, let us carry this hope with us. Just as the sun will stay a little longer each day, so too will the light of Christ illuminate our hearts and guide our steps. In the hustle of the holidays, take a moment to pause and marvel at the rhythms of God’s creation. Light always returns, just as joy and peace follow even the most challenging seasons.
From our homestead to yours, I wish you a season filled with hope, beauty, and the enduring joy of Christ’s love.
